- I've been cooking and baking for almost as long as I can remember, and before that I was watching my mother make apple pies (she always let me eat the long strips of peel), buns, verenikj and whatever else she made. One of the first things I learned to make as a child was unbaked cookies from an old Five Roses Flour cookbook. The first mistake I remember making in my culinary life was adding uncooked rice instead of coconut to these cookies. The second was adding macaroni to a pot of cold water. What a gooey mess that was. I moved to Toronto to do a PhD at the University of Toronto. My dissertation was entitled "'but what a strange commixture am I': Borders of Self and Religion in the Making of Women's Lives." Ask me what you want about nineteenth-century Canadian women. Now I've turned my efforts to working with other people's writing. I feel strongly that culture can be best understood in the little details of our lives, like food. If there's any intent behind my blog it is to examine culture through stories of food. But mostly I hope you enjoy my blog.
